57 new cases registered today

She adds that the bulk of those who test positive are unvaccinated, including those with severe symptoms as a result of the infection.

Department of Health and Medical Services Permanent Secretary Pauline McNeil said the country now had 57 more positive cases of COVID-19 today, following a 24-hour testing and reporting period.

Ms McNeil was speaking on the Oversight Committee talk show today afternoon.

She says 126 samples were tested, of which 57 came back positive. She says that brings the total number of community transmissions to 320 since the first case was detected.

She says at least 15% of those who have tested positive are under 18, with 20% over 45.

She adds that the bulk of those who test positive are unvaccinated, including those with severe symptoms as a result of the infection.

People are encouraged to get vaccinated tomorrow when vaccination sites open.

Meanwhile, additional measures have also been highlighted by the oversight committee, including a ban on the sale of betel and the lockdown of Burnscreek. Other localized interlocks are also contemplated.

It is still difficult to know the total number of people infected with COVID-19. What we currently have is the infection status of those who have been tested. The numbers are likely to be much higher.

So far, we currently have an average positivity rate of 40% (total tested vs total positive). According to the WHO, a positivity rate of less than 5% is an indicator that the epidemic is under control in this country.
