How Rebecca beat binge eating and lost 32kg

Almost three years ago, Rebecca Jump made two good decisions – the first was to face her demons, while the second was to see a hypnotherapist to help her with the binge eating that had plagued her most. part of his life.

These two brave moves helped the 21-year-old Aucklander lose 32kg and, more importantly, reverse the destructive relationship with food she has had since she was seven.

“I can’t remember a time when I didn’t have a negative relationship with food,” says Rebecca of the Henderson household she shares with partner Dylan Waite.

Rebecca was seven years old when her parents separated, triggering a feeling of loneliness. “I would steal food from the pantry and hide it, even though I knew it was wrong. If I opened a packet of cookies, I forced myself to eat them all, even though it made me sick. . I couldn’t seem to stop.”

In addition to the usual hurtful childhood bullying, when Rebecca was 15, a boy she had a crush on rejected her because of her size.

“It reinforced that I’m fat so no one will want me. That’s why I turned to food because no matter what I was going through, whether I was happy or sad, food comforted me.”

Concerned about their daughter’s health, her parents took her to many doctors. “I was tested for thyroid, stomach and diabetes issues to see why I was gaining weight so quickly, but it all came back negative.”

His parents also encouraged the second of their three children to diet, keep a food diary, join gyms and take fitness, swimming and dancing lessons. “But I couldn’t find a plan or exercise that worked for me. I now know that losing weight has to be a choice and people can’t be forced into it.”

At her peak, Rebecca weighed 130 kg. But it wasn’t until Dylan, her partner of four years, questioned her poor eating habits that something snapped.

“One night in bed Dylan asked for a hug. But every night after work I would go to the supermarket and buy snacks and then sit in bed eating them. When I told Dylan that i was too full to cuddle he asked me why i was eating myself to the point of being uncomfortable every day when i couldn’t answer him i knew something was wrong not.

While researching binge eating, Rebecca realized she had an eating disorder. That’s how she found Richard Kellow, a hypnotherapist from Auckland who specializes in weight loss. “I had never heard of hypnotherapy as a weight loss technique, but I was at rock bottom and nothing else had worked, so I thought I’d give it a try.”

Rebecca’s parents paid for all six hour-long sessions with Richard, but even after the first Rebecca had “a bounce in my step”. She recalled, “It was my epiphany moment. I thought, ‘I can finally do this.’ I went straight home and started making the necessary changes, like eating smaller portions, eating only what my body needed, and eating slowly.”

In the first week, Rebecca had lost 5 kg. “I was amazed at how quickly the hypnotherapy worked. Every week I went back to see Richard, I became stronger and was able to resist the bad eating habits I had acquired over the years , from binge eating to missing breakfast.”

And she went from never touching a vegetable to now filling her plate with it.

“My relationship with food is so different from what it used to be,” she enthuses. “I learned to make better food choices and listen to my body when it comes to portion sizes. I hate the feeling of being full and couldn’t overeat now if I wanted to.”

Once weighing 130kg, Rebecca said: “I couldn’t overeat now if I wanted to.”

Embraced by her shrinking waist, Rebecca has also started cycling and walks the couple’s Maltese terrier Aria almost every day.

“I can move freely without getting tired. Losing weight has not only helped with my medical issues, but also improved my mental health.”

Rebecca says she still has 30lbs to lose before she hits her goal weight of 180lbs and admits she couldn’t have done it without hypnotherapy.

“Richard helped me change my life for the better. I got to where I am today through dedication and strength, but he motivated me and kept me on track with my weight loss goals. weight.”

Richard, who turned to hypnotherapy to manage his own weight loss issues, says it was about breaking Rebecca’s focus on food.
