British spy agencies have struck a deal with


Amazon

to host classified information on its cloud-based service so they can analyze the data using the tech giant’s artificial intelligence tools, according to reports.

The deal involving Amazon Web Services (AWS), worth £ 500-1 billion ($ 700-1.4 billion) over the next decade, was signed earlier this year and did not was not intended to be made public, the Financial Times reported Tuesday.

UK security services are said to use the high-security cloud service to take advantage of data analytics and artificial intelligence for classified documents.

MI5 and MI6, the UK’s domestic and foreign intelligence agencies, the General Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), the signals intelligence agency and the Department of Defense, are said to be the agencies using AWS.

A spokesperson for GCHQ said in an email that he had not “commented on the claims about [its] relationships with technology providers. Amazon Web Services, Amazon’s cloud services arm (ticker: AMZN), said it “will not provide any comment” on the matter.

According to the newspaper, all agency data will be kept in Britain and Amazon will not have access to it.

In a speech on Monday, GCHQ Director Jeremy Fleming said he believes there is a way for Western powers “to use artificial intelligence in the work of government and especially in the work intelligence “and” to approach privacy and security “while respecting their democratic principles.

“There is a way to do this work that puts our values ​​and our systems first,” he added.
