Baltimore Co. Police Counterfeit Weapons Certifications for Bribes: Official

BALTIMORE, MD – A federal grand jury indicted a Baltimore County police officer on Wednesday for requesting and accepting bribes to falsely certify gun training materials.

The Maryland District Attorney’s Office said William R. Johnson Jr., 32, of Baltimore, faces six counts of honest services wire fraud. He is accused of telling Maryland State Police that applicants for Handgun Rating and Harbor and Harbor Permits underwent training and falsified certifications after receiving applicants’ money.

According to a federal indictment, “Johnson solicited and accepted bribes and kickbacks, paid for through interstate electronic money transfer services like Venmo, CashApp and Zelle, from plaintiffs seeking HQL and CCWs in return for Johnson falsely certifying to Maryland State Police that the applicant had completed the training required by law, ”the statement read.

The alleged crimes took place between May 2019 and September 2021, the U.S. prosecutor’s office said.

“During conversations with the applicants, Johnson reportedly made it clear that once they paid the money, Johnson would send them the required documents and that they did not need to attend the required classes,” he said. said the US attorney’s office, referring to the indictment.

Johnson faces a maximum penalty to 20 years in prison on each of the six counts, the US attorney’s office said.
