Losing control, despite knowing its consequences, causes you to do or use things repeatedly to feel the effects.

Hunter Biden, son of US President Joe Biden, wrote about his struggles with addiction in a memoir published on April 6 of this year. The book titled, Beautiful Things, focuses on young Biden’s well-publicized struggles with drug addiction. To this, the President and the First Lady said: “We admire the strength and courage of our son Hunter to speak openly about his addiction so that others can see each other on his journey and find hope again.”

Everyone hopes for courage and recovery in this kind of addiction. Drug addiction stigmatizes or creates many barriers, and the person who suffers from it is less likely to open up about their habits. There is a sense of personal discomfort and sometimes acceptance is a problem.

It can often be the result of different personal choices and habits from diseases of biological origin. For example, excessive consumption of television content can wreak havoc in personal and professional life. And this, Abhilasha Ojha, a confessed recovering television addict, achieved it at his expense.

Singer-vocal coach, Ojha shares her first-hand experience when she started watching Netflix series day in and day out, “at the expense of my professional commitments and personal goals,” says the Delhi-based freelance writer. “I was in a trance state, not knowing when 30 minutes was more than six hours at a time. I hit rock bottom when one day I realized that it was impossible for me to put the “idiot box” on hiatus to drink water or even eat food, ”Ojha says.

It all started during the stressful months of lockdown last year, when Ojha quit her full-time job in April to focus on music. Since access to the substance of the abuse, in his case television, was easy and in his comfort zone, the process quickly got out of hand.

Losing control, despite knowing its consequences, causes you to do or use things repeatedly to feel the effects. Addiction or dependence on doing certain things is both mindful and stressful. Even though Ojha was aware of this change in behavior, she found some relief in the stressful times.

But how do you decide when strange habits like watching TV, playing video games, turning a light switch on and off five times before leaving the room, washing your hands 10 times before eating and, worse, transforming? addicted or the fact that they seem harmless but inadvertently become part of our daily lives?

According to Dr Megha Jain, a psychologist at Apollo Spectra Hospital in Kondapur, Hyderabad, the pandemic has witnessed symptoms and psychosociological disorders where people have been dependent or dependent on any type of substance or even a lifestyle. unhealthy. “Becoming addicted to something when you physically have nothing else to do is a very common and easily learned behavior. Addiction is not just about the substance; it can also be getting attached to whatever gets in the way of your daily life, ”she says.

Dr Megha Jain, psychologist, Apollo Spectra Hospital

A rewarding achievement
Broadly speaking, drug addiction can be classified into two main categories: drug addiction and behavioral addiction. Drug addiction is not just an addiction to cocaine and other drugs, but to simple substances like tea, coffee, sugar, etc. mobile / Internet or watch TV.

Actress-turned-entrepreneur Pooja Bedi says she is “tea happy”, who could happily drink 30 cups a day. His mornings would certainly be strange, incomplete, and perhaps even stressful without tea. “When you study NLP (Neurolinguistic Programming) – a psychological approach that involves analyzing the strategies used by individuals and applying them to achieve a personal goal – you will know that your association is fueling your answers. I have happy memories of soaking Marie cookies and laughing if it melted and sank to the bottom of our cups, looking forward to tea with hot bhajiyas on rainy days or its warmth and coziness on cold days to boarding school, ”explains the founder of Happy Soul, a lifestyle brand focused on health and well-being.

However, the emotional state of being in such stressful times is individualistic and is directly related to the degree of physical and mental support that surrounds it. For Nina Kler, a socially hyperactive wellness activist and mental health advocate, social media addiction was both positive and negative. The Delhi-based entrepreneur felt overworked and fell ill with an unknown virus that forced her to slow down her life. “In the absence of social and physical events, I spent great hours of the day on social media because their appeal is certainly addictive without realizing it,” she says.

However, when her friends and family forced her to start her own business, it was her stress levels and anxiety that pushed such thoughts out of her mind. “Fear of failure, irregular income, and exposing myself to judgment prevented me from exploring this option. Covid-19 forced me to experiment with a video channel online, Pursuit of Balance, where we can talk about wellness and mental health, and in a matter of weeks. The comments were so heartwarming that they forced me to face my anxiety head-on and opened up a whole new path for me, ”said the 40-year-old writer.

Dr Nimesh G Desai, Director, Institute of Human Behavior & Allied Sciences (IHBAS)

Can Harmful Addiction Help?

Most addictions, when they become a habit, make you feel temporarily good by stimulating brain chemicals serotonin and dopamine. The moment your body receives an addictive substance, the brain takes a hit. It is only with time that one can develop tolerance for addiction.

Take the case of Tina Roy *, 38, who quit her job giving birth to a baby in December of last year. From four to nine cans a day, the habit of consuming a soft drink has become an addiction for this German-based marketer. “The money and energy spent consuming made me so anxious that if I didn’t put my drink in the fridge, I would run to the store to buy one,” she says.

As Roy is about to quit smoking, she tells us how her doctor helped her physically withdraw from the caffeine in his drink. She watches TV and plays video games but nothing before bedtime as this can affect sleep and put her in the same process.

People who invariably check their phones every few minutes are also tech junkies. In a media report last year, a Patna-based newlywed couple broke up when the woman said she could live without her husband but not without her phone, as the phone was her only source of entertainment. at the home of his in-laws.

Addiction to technology in young adults is common and may be an underlying disease. Dr Nimesh G Desai, director of the Institute of Human Behavior & Allied Sciences (IHBAS), finds that addiction to technology or excessive use of social media is a matter of pleasure-seeking activities and often referred to as most important part of a lifestyle change. “As successive generations become more and more uninhibited in their quest for pleasure, traditional Indian society becomes restrictive. It’s evolutionary behavior, ”says Delhi-based Desai.

Conscious control
Recovery is not an overnight process, but the good news is that such addictions can be brought under control and accepting them is the first step forward. Dr Jain says that developing a proper course of action with professional help would ease the situation, triggers that can have a relapse effect should be avoided, keep it slow and steady, step by step. at the same time, would give a more powerful result. . She says, “Exercise is the most important activity to include because it releases happy hormones leading you to a motivated self. Talking about the challenges you face will help move towards its eradication. “

In Ojha’s case, she began to keep a daily journal, maintained daily habit tracking as well as a daily schedule. These tools gave a breakdown of the number of hours and allowed him to see what could be achieved after prioritizing the goals for the day.

Bedi avoided tea and learned Reiki Level 2 Energy Healing, an ancient practice for reducing stress, improving health and quality of life, and supporting physical and emotional healing. She abstained from dairy products, sugar, meat, cereals or tea for 90 days.

As Dr. Maheshwari suggests, you have to understand why you trust it, try to use the timer and restrict use, distract yourself with other activities or just connect with people more often. “Simple strategies don’t work or if you experience physical / withdrawal symptoms it’s time to see a doctor,” she says.

According to a new study from iwoca, one of Europe’s largest small business lenders, only 30% of small business owners with symptoms of poor mental health have sought help from a counselor or a professional. therapist.

A survey of over 1,000 small business owners found that lack of information about one-on-one support was the main reason for not accessing mental health help, with one in four owners (24 %) unaware that specific help for small businesses existed and one in five did not feel comfortable talking about mental health.

Free and confidential mental health support is now available for all small businesses in the UK

iwoca is launching free therapy sessions for all small business owners in the UK – in partnership with the Spill therapy platform – to make it easier for small business owners to access the support they need. All small business owners will be able to talk to trained mental health professionals via video.

The stress of owning a business affects mental well-being

More than a quarter (27%) of small business owners believe that owning a business has a negative impact on their mental health. Despite the mitigation of the pandemic, the survey found that three in four small business owners (72%) are worried about cash flow and 55% are worried about having to temporarily shut down their business. This is compared to 51% and 63% respectively in iwoca’s last SME owner survey in January 2021.

The survey found that 36% of them suffer from anxiety and one in five show symptoms of depression several times a month. Overall, 61% experience at least one symptom of poor mental health several times a month, an increase from 57% in January 2021.

Seema Desai, Director of Operations at iwoca, said: “Our research lifts the veil on the impact that running a business can have on the mental health of SME owners; and the pressures many of them face have worsened throughout the pandemic.

“We must therefore do everything possible so that our cafes, hairdressers and electricians can access the right support – adapted to them – to help them face the challenges that running a business can create.

“We have been providing mental wellness support through Spill to iwoca employees for over a year – this is one of our most valued benefits. Based on what we’ve learned about the mental health needs of small business owners, we’re now excited to extend this offering to them – to make sure they have access to the best support available, for free.

Will Allen-Mersh, Partner at Spill, added: “Ensuring our mental well-being should always come first. So we think it’s important that everyone has access to therapy; and small business owners should certainly be no exception. In fact, as iwoca’s research shows, owning a business can make it even more difficult to take care of your mental health.

“We are therefore delighted that iwoca is helping small business owners access our confidential professional therapy, and we hope that the support we provide will help them cope with the pressures that running a business can bring. “

Small business owner and iwoca client Rebecca Lockwood – owner of a training consultancy for women entrepreneurs in Yorkshire – said: “As a business owner I really have to keep the spirit on the right track. Before I trained in neurolinguistic programming, I didn’t understand how to do this and found myself a lot to compare with other people and other business owners. I found myself in a rough spot thinking that I had to do everything and be everything – a mom, a business owner, a wife – to be successful.

“There is a misconception that you have to work all the time to be successful. There is so much more pressure on you to make sure you are doing it right and we can create that perception in our minds that causes a negative loop. What most people don’t think about is how productive rest is for our state of mind and mental health.

“I tap into my own support and make sure I contact myself at least weekly. I have worked with coaches and self-taught to help me with the direction and the mindset which has had a huge positive effect on my mental health. Working with a coach or therapist can really have an impact on your mental well-being; you are able to let out whatever is going on in your mind with a sounding board. A lot of people don’t consider doing it because it isn’t talked about enough.

As finance and accounting professionals are increasingly called upon to lead strategic initiatives in complex and unexplored territories such as environmental, social and governance (ESG) reporting, blockchain technology and digital currencies, their ability to find and develop creative solutions will become essential.

And as artificial intelligence (AI) takes over more of “traditional” accounting tasks, finance professionals will also need to adopt more strategic, creative, and innovation-driven roles in order to remain relevant to the business. era of the machine.

“Finance professionals are now required to go well beyond technical layers and financial data to offer clients dynamic and tailor-made solutions, which requires a more creative and fluid mindset,” explains Mohamed Zayne. Nabbee, ACMA, CGMA, group financial manager at Creative. CFO, a global finance consultancy based in South Africa.

Yet in an industry that has long been characterized by linear processes and the rapid delivery of very specific and tangible results, the shift to more abstract and creative ways of thinking might require a different set of techniques.

FM magazine spoke to Nabbee and Gabriella Goddard, Director of Coaching at the Brainsparker Leadership Academy in the UK, to find out how finance professionals can develop and hone their creative thinking skills – and prepare for the complexity and the uncertainty that awaits them.

Divert your thinking. When faced with a challenge, it’s important to diverge your thinking before you converge on a solution, Goddard said. Divergent thinking involves generating various ideas or approaches to a challenge in a short period of time. Characteristics of divergent thinking include allowing ideas to take shape in the absence of criticism and over-analysis.

“Expanding the range of possibilities can lead to new connections, and one of them could spark this ‘aha’ idea,” Goddard explained.

To do this, start by asking a question about your problem, starting with “How could we …?” For example, “How could we use AI to speed up the expense approval process?” “This type of question inherently implies that there is a solution and gives you the perfect framework to think about multiple possibilities,” Goddard said.

Another way to expand the range of possible options is to use concept mapping, she noted. This is a radial diagram where you write the central problem in the middle of a blank page and then branch it out with different possible answers.

Each branch can then be extended with additional details.

“Mapping your ideas in this visual format not only increases the amount of ideas you generate, but it can also reveal new connections that you hadn’t thought of before,” she said.

Allow time for unstructured reflection. At Creative CFO, professionals are encouraged to set aside time in their calendar for brainstorming and creative, unstructured thinking. These sessions could be spent brainstorming for a specific client or organizational challenge, or developing new financial models or tools for wider use.

According to Nabbee, it’s important to make sure these sessions take place on a day when there are very few technical sessions or technical meetings, so that the mind can relax and shift to a less production-oriented fluid mode. .

“Also make sure that these creative or free-flowing sessions are visible on your shared calendar and communicated to your colleagues, so that you are not interrupted and that you do not have any technical requests to answer during this period”, a- he declared.

Clear your mind before entering these sessions and try to avoid having any preconceptions or expectations about the outcome, he added.

Take a sheet from Disney’s playbook. When approaching or problem-solving, it’s easy to cling to a point of view, Goddard warned. One way out of a single view is to follow the Disney Method, a technique developed by neurolinguistic programming (NLP) expert Robert Dilts. NLP is considered to be a psychological approach to changing thoughts and behavior that involves analyzing the strategies used by successful individuals and applying them to personal goals.

According to Goddard, Dilts modeled how American entrepreneur and film producer Walt Disney came up with his ideas – and one of the main aspects of the Disney method is that it forces you to look through different lenses, a- she declared.

“First of all, you look at the problem through the eyes of the Dreamer and create a vision of the ideal outcome,” she explained. “Then you go realistically and think about how to turn that imaginary idea into a tangible plan of action.”

Finally, you get into the critique and explore the potential risks and weaknesses of the idea. “As you take these steps sequentially, any ideas that come to an end are more likely to be successful.”

For finance and accounting professionals tasked with creating new frameworks and structures that meet the demands of the digital age – as well as the complexities of social and environmental pressures – the daily use of creative thinking techniques could provide unexpected and impactful solutions.

In this Question from the requester, Bara Sapir, CEO and Founder of the test preparation company City Test Prep, presents her top tips for dealing with stress and controlling your anxiety during the MBA application process.

During the application process, you can manage stress by creating a schedule, partnering with professionals, implementing performance-enhancing skills such as speed reading, and incorporating stress reduction techniques. stress from psychology and wellness practices.

1. Create an MBA program

Plan a schedule four to six months ahead of target deadlines with dedicated time to complete it. 2f963d7ea8c1490f88d444124d94b3f177cad4fb.jpg

The more time you give, the less stressful it will be. It is a wonderful feeling to submit a full application, especially well before the deadline!

Here is an idea of how to share your time:

– Application and testing: three to six weeks for research and reflection; then for each subsequent school, two to three weeks for rewrites and modifications.

– Preparation for the test and taking the test: a minimum of two or three months of dedicated study, including at least 120 hours of practice if you want to obtain the best score. Also plan two to three test dates.

– Plan time in advance to engage with schools and contact students and alumni.

Good health habits, such as exercise, sleep, and healthy eating, will also promote emotional regulation and promote engagement, so be sure to include them in your plan.

Also schedule time once or twice a week to assess, reconcile, and adjust your schedule as needed.

2. Get professional support

If you are stressed out about producing the best test results or effective trials, you can hire dedicated professionals to help you.

Having the right support system can make a huge difference in reducing stress because you won’t have to fend for yourself. It keeps you on track, maximizes efficiency, and professionals can save months or even years from your process.

You don’t have to worry about the cost, as you will find a range of services available to suit all budgets. It’s about finding the right person, so take advantage of free consultations to “interview” providers and compare expertise and approaches.

Admission Consultants will help you improve your application and ensure that your essay is compelling and well written. They will also coach you for interviews with advice on what to wear.

Test Preparation Professionals will accelerate and perfect your test preparation and taking efforts by customizing your study to meet your score goals and timing.

3. Improve efficiency with speed reading

Improving test-taking skills that help you study smarter rather than harder, like speed reading, leads to feeling more in control and less restless. Faster reading gives you more time to think critically and answer questions, which you get credit for.

If you read less than 300 words per minute with poor to good comprehension, consider learning this skill.

In 5 hours, you can increase your reading speed up to five times faster and improve reading performance by an average of 13%.

Our all new MindFlow is an online platform with GMAT, EA and GRE speed reading training tracks.

MindFlow also offers a “state of mind” channel with yoga, sound therapy and various calming exercises to help relieve anxiety and regulate emotionally.

4. Optimize your state of mind

Change your perspective with a growth mindset, anxiety reassessment, and a variety of holistic, mindful techniques to help eliminate anxiety.

Growth mindset

Instead of feeling defeated in response to challenges and obstacles, adopt a “growth mindset.”

When you notice you’re thinking, “I’m a bad test taker or a bad writer,” trade that negative inner monologue with, “I can. to improve and go areach my goals.

This simple but profound change increases motivation and confidence. Learn more about the growth mindset of Stanford University psychologist Dr. Carol Dweck here.

Anxiety reassessment

‘Anxiety reassessment’ is another autosuggestion and messaging method that reassigns’ anxiety ‘to’ arousal ‘and shifts you from a stressed’ threat state ‘to a’ “opportunity” positive mindset.

When you feel anxious, just say aloud “I’m excited” or instruct yourself to “get excited!” These statements help shift to a more positive mindset, and all of this is supported by research from Harvard University.

Holistic and conscious techniques

Holistic and mindful techniques such as tapping, hypnosis, visualization, neurolinguistic programming, and mindfulness transform feelings of anxiety into feelings of focus, confidence and calm.

Visualize yourself starting your test, at home or in a center, and imagine that you are feeling well; alert, calm and present.

Replay this scene in your mind like in a movie, and in doing so, you will create tracks of “imagined memories” that will increase your chances of passing the actual test in that desired state.

Sports psychologists guide world-class athletes through similar processes to help them achieve peak performance.

For more methods of relieving anxiety, listen to my interview on the Accepted.com podcast, my webinar with Unimy, or try some apps, like Calm and Insight Timer, which offer relaxing meditations.

Incorporating a schedule, hiring professionals, and using supportive methods derived from psychology, holistic wellness, and mindfulness will empower you to take control, lift yourself away from stress. and get you into more emotionally positive states.

These upgrades will make your application process more fun and relaxed, and will undoubtedly produce better results on your application, on tests, and in life.

Ed Balls, former cabinet minister, famous cook and star of “Gangnam Style” Strictly, didn’t realize he was stuttering until he was in the thick of it.

The former Labor MP, who lives with his wife MP Yvette Cooper and their three children, talks about his stuttering in his new memoir, Appetite, which traces his life and relationship to food.

After going public, Balls, 54, became vice president of Action for Stammering Children and persuaded Colin Firth to join him. Together, they have spoken to many parents and children over the years about stuttering and what they have both learned.

When did you realize you had a stutter?

“I didn’t know it was a stutter until I was already in Cabinet. I had discovered that I had a challenge speaking in public in certain situations, ”he explains.

“Once I got the Cabinet job and spoke regularly on TV or in Parliament, my occasional ‘blockages’ – unexpected pauses when I couldn’t speak my words – became a serious problem, so far. point that the Conservative members opposite have started to fill the painful moments of silence with loud mockery, ”he recalls in his memoirs.

Today he recalls: “When I was chosen to be an MP in 2004, I spoke to my father after BBC Any Questions? and he said, ‘You have the same thing as me but I don’t know what it is.

“I spent two or three years trying to find out what it was and trying to figure out how to deal with the fact that sometimes my speech got stuck in TV interviews and in the House of Commons.

“It got worse when I became cabinet minister. We went to investigate and were told it was “internalized stuttering” (much like Colin Firth’s George VI in The King’s Speech).

When did you talk about it publicly?

“It wasn’t until two years later, when I first spoke about it publicly in an interview, that my father called me to tell me that he had read the interview and that he also had stammered.

“He was 70 years old and had been a university professor for 30 years and he never knew what kept him from doing television, and which meant he didn’t read scripts when he was in class. – he was making them from notes in his head – it was because he had a stutter.

Did anyone notice that you spoke differently when you were in school?

Appetite by Ed Balls (Gallery Books UK / PA)

“If you had my last name, there were other things you had the mickey removed for besides your stuttering.” But at school it stood out if I was in English and had to read a play, or in the debate club when I was speaking.

“But I bluffed and didn’t really think of it as something that was a problem. It was really only when it was happening live on television or in the House of Commons that it became a problem. “

“I did. I had speech therapy every week for three years. I was put in touch with a speech therapist called Jan Logan from City Lit, who said it was a stutter. spent six months arguing with her about whether it was a stutter or not, because I didn’t really believe it.

“She said, ‘You have to go public,’ but I said, ‘I can’t. I am a cabinet minister and we do not admit that sort of thing ”. It took me another two or three years before I finally agreed to go public and it was a very big liberating thing. “

What is your advice to people who stutter?

“My advice would be, everyone is different. You have to find out what works for you. Never be told, “This is what stuttering is and this is how you need to get help.” Some people like exercise, some people like breathing, some people like NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) but you have to find your way.

“It’s not something you catch or something that heals itself. It’s just a part of you. Owning it, accepting it and making it a part of you is really important. Hiding it or denying it causes huge problems in terms of avoidance.

What difference has stuttering made in your life?

“For me, being public makes a huge difference. I stammer all the time but I’m really good at driving it and handling it now.

“The reality is that a lot of the things I’ve done since, like Strictly, have been much easier to do after dealing with a stutter. It gave me the confidence to do a lot of difficult and fabulous things since then. If I chose again, I would choose a stutter.
