CHASSELL – Darwyn L. Côté, 84, from Chassell, died Friday, December 24, 2021 at his home following a long illness.

He was born March 26, 1937 in Hancock, son of the late William and Laura (Pakkala) Côté.

Darwyn grew up in L’Anse and graduated from L’Anse high school with the class of 1955.

On April 11, 1955, he married former Helen Sue Koski. They resided in L’Anse, Iron Mountain, Beechwood, Mohawk and Chassell.

Mr. Côté had held various jobs such as the railroad, on ore ships, as a meat cutter for the A&P, the L’Anse Drycleaner and for the Fuller Brush Company.

They then moved to Iron Mountain, where he began a long and successful career with Banker’s Life & Casualty Insurance Company, retiring after 43 years.

During this time, he and his wife were ordained evangelical ministers and had a pastoral and musical ministry assisting many individuals and congregations throughout the Upper Peninsula and northern Wisconsin. Most recently he was the pastor of the Maranatha Free Lutheran Church in Chassell, retiring due to health issues.

Darwyn enjoyed spending time in the outdoors, hunting and fishing. He loved music and art and was a gifted musician, both as a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and many friends who were blessed with his wonderful sense of humor.

His parents and grandparents preceded him in his death.

His wife, Sue Cote of Chassell, survived; children, Wil (Dara) Cote de Buffalo, New York, Brad (Holly) Cote de Waterloo, Iowa, Athena Cote de Chassell, Gordette (Ed) Leutz de Chassell; 16 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; brother and sister, James Côté of Chassell, Laurel (Ron) Gray of Chassell; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

All he loved dearly.

Darwyn’s funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 31, 2021 at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Chassell with the Reverend Michael Klenner officiating. Spring interment will take place in Chassell cemetery.

Friends can call Thursday, December 30, 2021 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Chapel of Remembrance in Chassell Funeral Home and Friday from 10 a.m. until service time at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Chassell.

In lieu of flowers, the family asked for donations to be made to the Maranatha Free Lutheran Church in Chassell or to a charity of their choice.

The funeral and cremation service at Chassell Memorial Chapel is helping the family with preparations.
