YOUNGSTOWN – Mr. Desey B. Cathey, 76, was transferred to his heavenly home on Sunday, December 5, 2021 at the Canfield Healthcare Center.

Mr. Cathey was born July 3, 1945 in Shelby County, Alabama, a son of Samuel and Oler Wilson Cathey, who arrived there in 1965. He graduated in 1964 from Prentice High School in Alabama. He worked for the US Steel Corporation for 16 years until it closed. He then worked as a bus driver with the Western Reserve Transit Authority for 17 years, before retiring in 2010.

Desey was a staunch member of Mount Zion Baptist Church until his illness. He was a member of the Men’s Choir and the Trustee Ministry. He loved bowling, was an avid car enthusiast, and was a huge Cavaliers and Cleveland Browns fan.

He is survived by, but to rejoice in his eternal peace, his wife, the ex Eva M. Herbert, whom he married on July 16, 1966; two daughters, Dionne Cathey of Youngstown and Laurie Hawkins of Birmingham, Alabama; five grandchildren, including Michael Cathey of Columbus, whom he helped raise; eight great-grandchildren; three brothers, Benjamin (Barbara) Cathey from Fayetteville, North Carolina, Jruby Cathey from Montevallo, Ala. and James (Gwendolyn) Cathey of Birmingham, Ala .; two sisters, Jewel Peoples of Youngstown and Linda Brown of Cleveland; and a host of nieces, nephews, family, church family and friends.

His parents welcomed him at the gate of heaven; two sisters, Elizabeth Cathey and Willie Ree McCary; and three brothers, Lester, David and Ellis Cathey.

Visitations will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 14, 2021 at the Mount Zion Baptist Church, 827 Wilson Ave., Youngstown. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. Due to the pandemic, all guests are required to wear masks and respect social distancing.

Services of love and dignity have been entrusted to LE Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home.
