Edinburgh business coach launches latest book focusing on better communication in business
Derek Borthwick, who has over 30 years of experience in sales, marketing and distribution, wrote “How to Talk to Anyone”, based on the science behind how the brain works to improve communication.
Mr Borthwick, founder of training company Power2Mind, said the book – the third he has written – is designed to help transform people’s understanding of others in professional settings.
“It builds on understanding the brain and explores the world of verbal communication,” explained the author, whose previous career was in financial services for companies such as JP Morgan.

“Using the power of words coupled with an understanding of non-verbal communication can not only reduce miscommunication, but also save money, increase efficiency, improve well-being, and close more sales and transactions,” he said.
“Used correctly, it can have a tremendous impact not only when building business and personal relationships, but also when promoting a business, managing people and closing a sale.”
Mr. Borthwick has lectured at several universities, including Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt, Napier and Stirling, on communication skills, presentation skills and management.
“The goal of the latest title is to help business people better present and read clients, close more deals, improve their coaching skills, gain accurate insights in interviews, and have more productive meetings,” said Borthwick, who is also a Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) Practitioner.
Prior to setting up his coaching business, he held the position of UK Business Development Manager for SYZ Asset Management.
The latter, which manages money on behalf of clients including pension funds, insurance companies and investment funds, and is part of SYZ & Co, headquartered in Geneva, was launched on the Scottish market in 2014 after taking up offices in Charlotte Square in the capital.
Mr. Borthwick previously served as vice president of UK sales for JP Morgan and senior director of sales for Fidelity Investments.
