Camden, South Carolina – On Monday, September 27, 2021, Hubert Claytor Young, Jr., 92, and Marcia Batchelder Young, 88, moved from their earthly home in Camden, SC to their heavenly home within hours of each other. , leaving behind a remarkable legacy of faith, generosity and love.
Hubert was the son of the late Hubert Claytor Young, Sr. and Thelma Williamson Young. He graduated from Lower Richland High School, where he played football. He then attended Clemson and played football under Frank Howard. He was a member of the US Air Force during the Korean conflict and served for 8 years.
Marcia was the daughter of the late Maurice L. Batchelder and Annie Bowers Batchelder of Columbia, SC. Marcia was an only child and developed a love for music and the piano early on. She graduated from Dreher High School before marrying the love of her life on June 9, 1950, at Rosewood Baptist Church in Columbia.
After getting married, Hubert and Marcia moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, where they started their family. Hubert worked as a lineman for the telephone company. It was in Raleigh that the couple’s entrepreneurial spirit ignited with the creation of a local trampoline park. Continuing with this in mind, Hubert and Marcia were inspired to own a business closer to home, bringing them back to the Midlands.
The Youngs settled in Camden, South Carolina, where they raised their three children while operating the famous and famous Tastee-Freez for over 15 years until their retirement to pursue missionary work. Throughout their ministry, they participated in 21 long-term mission trips to Kerala, India. While in Kerala, they helped build a Christian seminary to train and equip new pastors and also served the Light of Hope Children’s Mission orphanage. In addition to overseas missions, Hubert and Marcia served in migrant camps in Homestead, Florida. The Youngs continued to serve migrant camps every year until 2019.
Over the years, they have served faithfully in several churches in Camden through their gifts of music and preaching. While their ministry was far-reaching, their families’ desire to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior was their primary mission in life.
They were staunch Clemson fans, attending over 300 home games since 1970. Hubert even had an appearance by Coach Swinney in his 90th birthday celebration. The Young people were avid travelers as well and visited over 30 countries and all 50 states, many of them through their Airstream.
The survivors are their children, Marcia Jeanette Young McDonald, of Lugoff, Hubert Claytor, “Clay” Young III (Beverley), of Leesville, and Wanda Young Hunter (Wayne), of Sumter; 11 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren and Mr. Young’s sister, Betty Thompson of Columbia.
The funeral will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday October 2, 2021, at the First Baptist Church, Camden. Pastors Rusty Shuler and Phillip Gerrald will officiate. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at 12:30 p.m. at the Fellowship Center before the service.
