Dear sugar sugar,

Swelling in the legs really doesn’t look good during pregnancy. But don’t worry, it will pass soon. After you give birth to your baby, everything will be back to how it was before.

The good thing is that there is help for this and it is simple. Just lie on your side. This can help relieve the increased pressure on your veins.

Here are some more tips for you.

Put your feet up. When you’re at work, keep a stool or grab a stack of books and put them under your desk and put your legs on them.

If you are seated, do not cross your legs or ankles.

As you sit, stretch your legs, heel first, then gently flex your foot to stretch your calf muscles. Rotate your ankles and wiggle your toes.

Take regular breaks when sitting or standing. Do this at least every two hours and take a walk.

Choose and wear comfortable shoes that can stretch to accommodate any swelling in your feet.

Avoid wearing socks or stockings with tight bands around the ankles or calves.

Opt for waist-high maternity support stockings and wear them before you get up in the morning so the blood doesn’t run around your ankles.

Drink, drink, and drink water. Your body will retain less of it than it will retain.

Sweat regularly. Go for a walk, swim or take a water aerobics class. Immersing yourself in water can temporarily help reduce swelling, especially if the water level is high near your shoulders.

Eat well and avoid junk food. The salt they contain can hold more water in your body.

Good luck!

Dr Fritz
