Neosho School District closes school on Friday, April 1 due to annual citywide garage sale

Buses unable to travel down many city streets

NEOSHO, Mo. — A local school district has a day off scheduled for tomorrow (4/1) due to garage sales, and it’s no “April Fool’s Day” joke.

Starting Friday and ending Saturday, the city of Neosho holds its annual citywide garage sale.

This sale attracts thousands of people to Neosho, as many townspeople participate by selling what they no longer need or want.

Because the event draws so many people, the Neosho School District decided to close the school on the Friday when the citywide garage sale begins.

Neosho Schools Superintendent Dr. Jim Cummins said that with so many people participating or attending the citywide sale, it poses a danger to students.

“Our buses aren’t able to go down some of these city streets when the sales are going on, so we literally can’t get students to and from school,” Dr Cummins said.

“If classes were to take place tomorrow (4/1), it would be dangerous for those walking to school, due to increased traffic throughout the city,” Dr Cummins continued.

For the past few years, the Neosho School District has worked with the Neosho Chamber of Commerce to find out when dates are set for the annual citywide sale and to ensure that the school n is not open the first day. sales.

For those who attend Neosho schools, it is a scheduled day off that has been on the calendar since the start of the school year.

“The city-wide garage sale is a unique, annual event here at Neosho, and we are pleased to work with the Chamber,” said Dr. Cummins.

The Neosho School District said making the first Friday of the citywide garage sale a scheduled day off will ensure students and staff are safe and away from it all. traffic.
