Obituary of Dorothy Harrer (1930 – 2021) – Mt. Pleasant, PA

Dorothy Jane Harrer, 90, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Friday December 24, 2021. She was born December 28, 1930 in Mt. Pleasant Township, daughter of the late Andrew John Fencil and Edna Susan (Sheets) Fence. Dorothy was a loving and dedicated mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Spending time with his family brought him a lot of joy, whether it was a family game night or a family dinner. Grammy’s stuffed peppers were in frequent demand. In addition to her role as a housewife, she maintained vending machines for a number of businesses and was a bus driver for Laidlaw for 20 years. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Scottdale, where she was past president of the Clingerman class and a member of the United Methodist Women. She spent many years presiding over the Christmas shoebox ministry and organized the funeral meals, where her au gratin potatoes became famous. Dorothy enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and camping. She grew up on a farm and milked cows alongside her father and brothers. Her fondest memories were spending the summers in Guard, MD, at the family’s summer home. She was also an avid bingo player and was a member of the Jewel Bowling League. She loved music, from singing hymns in church to listening to John Denver. Hissing a tune while she looked after her house was a common sound. It brought him great pride to have kept a pristine home. She is survived by her loving family, which includes her three children, Richard D. Harrer Jr. and his wife, Marcia, Darcy Pallone and her husband, Angelo and Dan Harrer and his wife, Karen; his grandchildren, Sarah Shipley (Dreyer), Jared Harrer (Chelsey), Andrew Harrer (Jody), Katie Bandemer (James), Eric Harrer (fiancee, Carly Herman) and Jordan Warrick (Melvin); her great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Brock, Harper Sue, Beckett, Adam, Jett, Vance, Easton, Caroline, Felicity Jane and one to come soon; one sister, Melva Burkholder; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Fencil and Jessie Fencil; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by the father of her children, Richard D. Harrer Sr .; and her siblings, Marietta Cramer, Joseph D. “JD” Fencil, John and Eugene Fencil, Elizabeth Blystone, Carroll Fencil and her little sisters, Ada Peal and Edna Gertrude. Family and friends are welcome from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at GRAFT-JACQUILLARD FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICES INC., 303 Pittsburgh Street, Scottdale, where his funeral will be held Monday at 11 a.m. with Reverend Daymond Schmuck. Interment will follow at St. John’s Union Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant.
