Just because Slash talked about his life in an autobiography doesn’t mean he’s looking forward to reading about other people’s lives. The great guitarist hinted as much when speaking with Barbara Caserta in an interview for Linea Rock in Italy (see below).
The guitarist admits rock ‘n’ roll interests him as a reading subject, but he doesn’t necessarily agree when it comes to individual biographies. “To tell you the truth, I don’t read books about rock and roll. I’ve read a book about national artists and I’ve read books about rock and roll, but I’ve never read those from someone else… Well, I’ve read Jim Morrison’s, and I’ve read Joe Perry’s most recent, but for the most part I steer clear of autobiographies,” says the guitarist.
Further explaining why he avoids them, he explains: “A lot of it is because I know people – I know the people who wrote them – and I feel like I’m spying on them. [Laughs] It’s like following people on their Instagram; if you know them, you feel like you’re spying.”
He goes on to add, “I also used to think that rock and roll books were 75% bullshit too, and I didn’t want to get into that…Because autobiographies are largely written by people. other people, or the biographies are totally written by other people, so it’s their own fantasy that they kind of build into these books. It kind of inspired me to write my book myself and not to rely too much on a ghostwriter – to be as honest as possible. So they inspired me in that way.”
Slash dug into his own history with the memoir simply titled Slash in 2007. Since that book, which the guitarist wrote to set the record straight with Guns N’ Roses, he’s reunited with Axl Rose and Duff McKagan in the lineup. current group.
