The Career Counseling Center (CCC) of United International University (UIU) organized a two-day job fair titled “UIU National Job Festival – 2022”.

The fair which started on Sunday ended on Monday with a closing ceremony held at the UIU Auditorium, a press release read.

On this occasion, the President and CEO of United Group, Moinuddin Hasan Rashid United, was present as the main guest.

Loans canceled for ITT Tech students, including 70 in Boise

Alumni of the ITT Technical Institute of Boise will have their federal diploma student loans canceled, following action by the US Department of Education.

Seventy ITT students who owed $1.7 million – an average of $24,286 per person – see their debt erased after being defrauded by the for-profit school, a spokesperson for the US Department of Education told the Idaho statesman via email.

Not only that, but students, who were stranded when ITT Tech closed without warning in 2016, will have money they paid for their repaid federal loans. This includes money paid voluntarily or through a collection agency. The discharge will also be reported to the credit bureaus so that any unfavorable information is removed.

The Boise students were among approximately 16,000 students nationwide who the government says were deceived by ITT, Westwood College, DeVry University and Minnesota School of Business/Globe University. The action will lead to the cancellation of $415 million in student loans.

“Students rely on the sincerity of their colleges,” US Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona said in a press release. “Unfortunately, today’s findings show too many cases where students have been misled by loans from institutions or programs that have failed to deliver on their promises.”

The loans were made through the Federal William D. Ford Direct Loan Program, the Federal Family Education Loan Program, and the Federal Perkins Loan Program. The discount does not apply to loans issued by states or private lenders.

Most of the students affected by the loan forgiveness have not attended other schools in the three years since ITT Tech closed, and their discharges will be made automatically, the Department of Education said. Students who enrolled elsewhere but did not complete a course of study may still be eligible for a discharge but must apply.

ITT operated as a “large-scale, for-profit predatory institution” from its beginnings in 1969 until it declared bankruptcy and abruptly ceased operations in September 2016. according to a scathing 209-page report published last month by The Project on Predatory School Lending at Harvard University.

Hundreds of thousands of students have enrolled at ITT Tech at 130 campuses across the country, drawn by “promising careers in growing fields with high salaries,” the report said.

“But those promises were pure lies,” the Harvard investigation concluded. “ITT’s business model was both nefarious and simple: incentivize students to enroll and stay enrolled and reap the benefits of their federal student aid. ITT encouraged its recruiters to attract as many people as possible. Recruiters preyed on prospective students in vulnerable situations, saying whatever it takes to sell ITT to unsuspecting individuals.

The vast majority of ITT students left school without a degree or “ended up with a useless degree,” the report said. What they left behind was “exorbitant student debt and the inability to repay it.”

The Predatory School Loans Project represents hundreds of thousands of former ITT Tech students in a class action against the ongoing bankruptcy proceedings of the deceased company.

The study authors say they documented 95 instances of wrongdoing at ITT’s Boise campus alone. These included fraudulent registration and financial practices; misrepresent that ITT credits would transfer to legitimate colleges and universities and even other ITT programs (they didn’t); and lying about the cost of attendance, instructor qualifications, and graduate placement rates.

Overall, the study reported over 13,000 verified cases of wrongdoing. They were documented by student complaints, internal company documents, audits, human resources records and other documents, according to the report.

In the early 1990s, the ITT Technical Institute promoted careers in computer science to recruit students from Boise. While ITT said in that Sept. 28, 1993 announcement that it offered “highly experienced and highly qualified instructors,” a Harvard University group that studied the business said the Boise campus exaggerated the background and qualifications of instructors. The ITT Technical Institute came to Boise in 1986 after purchasing the highly respected Link’s School of Business, which had been teaching students in Treasure Valley since 1906.

ITT Tech was founded in 1969 and went public in 1994, before declaring bankruptcy and closing 22 years later.

In 2014, 58 of ITT Tech’s operations, including Boise, were operating at a loss, says the report. The company eviscerated administrative and teaching staff, forcing them to obtain these services from the company’s headquarters or another campus.

The Boise operation was forced to have one employee in the positions of finance manager and registrar, positions previously held by two people. Students started complaining about problems with their schedules.

“This problem with the calendar goes back to being reduced to a small campus census and letting go of our registrar,” the report quotes the Boise school’s anonymous principal in a December 2014 email sent to ITT headquarters. Tech. “We had to combine the position of finance director and registrar, which took time to hire someone. They trained for DOF and started transitioning to Registrar, got frustrated and quit.

“Another campus handled our schedules and the dean tried to help with schedule changes, transfer credits, etc., after the registrar left.”

The Harvard investigation found that 31% of ITT Tech’s revenue in 2014 was spent on marketing. This included $50 million for national television advertising, $48.8 million spent with local television stations, and $1.7 million for radio advertising across the country.

Since January 2021, the Department of Education has issued $9.9 billion in loans to more than 678,000 ITT Tech borrowers nationwide. The agency could not provide numbers Friday on the total number of Idaho students with loans that have since been canceled.

UAE Foreign Ministry calls for de-escalation in its first official statement on Ukraine

Russia’s Defense Ministry has denied reports that one of its missiles hit a residential building in Kiev, saying the damage was caused by a Ukrainian anti-aircraft projectile, Russian news agencies reported on Saturday, citing a source at the ministry.

“The reports on social media about a Russian missile attack on a residential building on Lobanovsky Avenue in Kyiv are not true,” the Defense Ministry source said, according to TASS and RIA Novosti. “The nature of the damage to the house indicates that an anti-aircraft missile hit it. This is clearly visible on the video.

“Obviously, during the fight against a night rocket attack on military infrastructure … of Ukraine, a failure occurred in the missile guidance system of the Ukrainian medium-range air defense system Buk -M1, and the missile hit the corner of a residential building,” the source added, according to TASS and RIA Novosti.

US approves $100m sale for missile upgrades to Taiwan

WASHINGTON, Feb 7 (Reuters) – The United States has approved a possible $100 million sale of equipment and services to Taiwan to “support, maintain and improve” its Patriot missile defense system, the Pentagon said on Monday. , drawing a furious threat of retaliation from Beijing.

China, which claims Taiwan as its own, regularly opposes US arms sales, adding to existing Sino-US tensions.

A statement from the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency said it issued the required certification notifying Congress after State Department approval for the sale, which was requested by the Embassy de facto from Taiwan to Washington.

Upgrades to the Patriot air defense system “would help improve recipient security and help maintain political stability, military, economic balance and progress in the region,” the DSCA said in a statement.

“This sale proposal serves the national, economic, and security interests of the United States by supporting the recipient’s continued efforts to modernize its armed forces and maintain a credible defensive capability,” the agency said.

The main contractors would be Raytheon Technologies (RTX.N) and Lockheed Martin (LMT.N), he said.

Taiwan’s foreign ministry said it “strongly welcomes” the decision.

“In the face of China’s continued military expansion and provocative actions, our country will maintain national security with strong defense and continue to deepen the close security partnership between Taiwan and the United States,” he said. in a press release.

In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian issued a strong condemnation.

“China will take appropriate and vigorous measures to firmly safeguard its sovereignty and security interests,” he told reporters.

Asked what measures China would take, Zhao replied, “I want to ask everyone to wait and see.”

China has imposed sanctions on Lockheed Martin and other US companies in the past for selling weapons to Taiwan, although the form of the sanctions is unclear.

The ministry said the deal was to “go into effect” within a month.

The democratically-ruled island has complained about repeated Chinese air force missions into its air defense zone, part of what Washington sees as Beijing’s effort to pressure Taipei to he accepts his sovereignty.

The United States, like most countries, has no official relations with Taiwan, but Washington is its biggest supporter and is bound by law to provide it with the means to defend itself.

US officials have pushed Taiwan to modernize its military so that it can become a “porcupine”, which is difficult for China to attack.

Rockland Trust donates $25,000 to Newton Financial Nonprofit

NEWTON, MA – The Rockland Trust Charitable Foundation has awarded $25,000 to American Consumer Credit Counseling, Inc. (ACCC), an Auburndale nonprofit dedicated to helping clients regain control of their finances and plan a debt-free future.

The money will support ACCC’s Help, Education, Action, Reminders and Goals (HEART) program, which provides weekly coaching and advice to improve the financial well-being of members of the community.

“ACCC is grateful for the support of the Rockland Trust Foundation so that we can grow within Massachusetts communities that have experienced financial hardship and insecurities,” said Katie Ross, Executive Vice President of ACCC, in a press release. “This award will allow us to provide practical coaching and money management skills that aim to improve consumers’ financial independence and stability.”

Since 2010, the Rockland Trust Charitable Foundation has provided nearly $160,000 in grants to ACCC as part of its long-standing commitment to empowering communities through financial literacy.

“The Rockland Trust Charitable Foundation is proud to provide continued support to ACCC for more than a decade,” said Edward H. Seksay, Chairman and President of the Rockland Trust Charitable Foundation, in a statement. “Our partnership with the ACCC makes financial education accessible to vulnerable populations and strengthens the neighborhoods in which we work and live.”
ACCC works with community partners in Middlesex, Suffolk and Bristol counties who provide financial literacy, educational workshops, coaching and advice. The HEART program will consist of three eight-week sessions serving 60 consumers over a six-month period that began in January 2022.
