Temple University announces plans for in-person and online fall classes – The Temple News

Temple University announcement On Tuesday, a phased approach to reopening the campus to hold a mix of in-person and online classes for the fall 2020 semester.

The semester will begin on August 24 as scheduled and end with in-person operations on November 20, with the final week of classes and finals taking place remotely. “Very large” classes will be conducted virtually and smaller classes will offer in-person instruction or a hybrid, according to the announcement.

As part of that plan, Temple is ready to transition to fully virtual teaching if needed, according to the announcement.

Temple will implement a five-phase approach to reopening the main campus over the summer in preparation for the fall. Currently, Temple is in phase one, allowing medical and security personnel, as well as construction and facilities workers on campus.

The second phase will begin later this month and will allow research and clinics to resume in select locations on campus. The third phase will begin on June 23, at the start of Summer Semester II, and will allow a small number of classes to offer in-person instruction. The university will also pilot a number of procedures and protocols during phase three in preparation for the fall semester.

The fourth phase will begin on August 1 when students begin to move into the neighborhood surrounding the main campus. The fifth phase will allow students to move into residence halls as planned in mid-August before the start of the semester.

The announcement also outlined four “public health pillars” to keep the Temple community safe as the campus reopens. Under these pillars, everyone should wear a face covering while on campus facilities, wash or sanitize their hands frequently, practice social distancing in indoor campus spaces, and monitor their own health on a daily basis.

COVID-19 testing sites will move from Student Health Services at Cecil B. Moore Avenue to the street level of Morgan Hall Tower for Temple students and staff. Student Health Services will provide a contract tracing unit to notify city and state health officials when staff or students test positive.

Temple Japan and Temple Rome will follow the same guidelines as the main campus as restrictions in Rome and Japan are lifted. International university travel is suspended for professors until June 30 and for students until August 15.

On the 15th of each month, the university will update all restrictions based on international, national, state, and local guidelines.
