Volunteers needed for Project Love

Riggin

LAURINBURG – The outreach department that helps hundreds of American families is preparing holiday gifts for area families starting December 1.

Pastor Niki Mays, co-founder of Healing Waters Ministries, and her husband Reverend Jeremy Mays are calling on the community to help wrap gifts for families in need.

In a statement, Pastor Mays said her love for American missions prompted her to create the Love Project to help families in some of the most needy counties. The project has been helping families for over 10 years.

But volunteers are still needed.

On Friday, December 3, at least 250 people are needed to help unload food, clothing and toys from trucks, said Denise Riggins, Church Community Services of Scotland County coordinator. Volunteers can arrive at 6 am, when breakfast will be served. The event will run until 7 p.m. Lunch and dinner will also be offered to volunteers.

Riggins said anyone wishing to serve should call 910-276-8330 to schedule a shift for the event. Volunteers are requested to wear a red shirt so that they are visible to those in charge of the Love Project. Duties include helping customers choose items, manage the shopping area, and clean up at the end of the event.

The Love Project will take place at the old gymnasium of I. Ellis Johnson Elementary School on Saturday, December 4, 8 am to 5:30 pm Participants, who are not served by other local Christmas programs, should have a valid ID and address and will be served on a first come basis.

For volunteers, there will be a rehearsal of the event from Saturday Friday at 7 p.m.

The Love project is organized in collaboration with Church Community Services, Northview Harvest Ministries, The NAACP, Scotland County Ministerial Alliance and Scotland County Department of Social Services.
