York County Higher College is starting a new semester soon

CESO – York County Senior College begins spring semester on March 29, via zoom.

Classes, for ages 50 and up, range from arts and literature to history, wellness, nature and beyond. York County Senior College has choices that suit a variety of interests.

Registration will be processed online with COURSE STORM using a credit or debit card. Registrants will find the information on the yorkcountyseniorcollege.org website. For questions and more information, call 207-282-4030. Courses range from three to eight weeks, $ 25 each with a current registration fee of $ 25.

The rest of the story is a continuation of “The Way We Were” by Fred Boyle. This course will cover the period of American history from the 1930s to Obama’s presidency.

Memories of the 1950s – with Lorraine Dutile-Masure who also brings many years of teaching to Senior College. This course is a part of history, a part of personal memories, a part of music from the decade. “Yakety Yak, don’t answer.”

Two Sides of Every Story – Mike Berkowitz will help us see both sides of the issues troubling our society. The left argues in one direction, the right in the other. Can we better understand the other perspective. We all know it can be tough and Mike will play devil’s advocate at times.

Bring a Book to Zoom in – Arlene Jackson continues her hugely popular book reading with attendees discussing the books cover to cover. This experience will be academic and social in nature. The list of books is on our website.

Introduction to Addiction – Jeff Goldsmith will provide a brief overview of the biological, psychological and socio-family dimensions as they influence the development of addiction and the process of recovery. This class was very well received last fall.

Introduction to Meditation – Jeff Goldsmith has meditated for 51 years as a Zen Buddhist and will bring his experience to your process. Jeff offered this during our winter term with positive feedback.

Addictions Part II – Jeff Goldsmith will focus more in depth, than Intro to Addiction, on the disease of addiction, the neurobiology of addiction, the family dynamics of addiction and much more. Jeff is board certified in addiction medicine and is a past president of the American Society of Addiction Medicine 2015-2017.

Yin yoga – Join Andrea Gleason for a gentle Yin Yoga practice. Slow down, calm your mind, and step into your body. Andrea is certified by the Yoga Alliance as a 500 RYT, E-RYT and YACEP. She is also a Reiki Master Practitioner and Triathlon Coach in the United States, Level 1

Writing from Memory – John Forssen is a retired Assistant Professor of English Literature at the University of New England, specializing in writing. He also contributes to the writing of the publication Kennebunk Village. John will guide the participants to draw short stories from their memories. They don’t need to be autobiographical, but should draw heavily on our experiences and subsequent emotional responses.

Masterpieces of American Art History – Robert Dunn is an active artist, who has always been interested in art history, artists and their work and has taught many courses in ‘the history of art. We will explore the landmark history of American art from its beginnings in the colonial past to WWI. The course covers painters such as Copley, Stuart, Sargent, Cassatt, Homer and many more.

Who hired you? – Pamela Albee CCHT, CHI, will help us remove influences, suggestibility, beliefs and energy from how we engage in worrying and repairing others with unintended consequences. Pam is a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist and Certified Hypnotherapy Instructor and has written a few eBooks

How Long Should Women Wait for Freedom and Justice – Anne B. Gass will present a three week course that will be a continuation of the history of suffrage and the Equal Rights Amendment. His fall classes have been very revealing and interesting, as I’m sure they will be this time around. 1. Vote against the rose. 2. We demand. 3. “There is nothing complicated about ordinary equality.” Anne is the author of Voting Down the Rose – on her great-grandmother and she continues her activist traditions.

Basic Digital Photography – Millet Day will take you outdoors to help you learn basic camera settings including ISO, shutter speed, aperture and white balance. I encourage you to have a tripod if possible. This will be his third year of teaching photography with YCSC, as well as a course while working at IDEXX Labs. You will go to Laudholm, Rachel Carson + others and the local beaches.

Outdoor Painting – Pat Wood takes you outdoors to make you aware of outdoor colors, atmosphere and composition by drawing in watercolor or acrylic paint. Pat is a former art teacher at Elan School, Thornton Academy, art director at Copley Square advertising agency.
