Brendan Pang opened a Pop-Up Bumplings cooking school in Mount Hawthorn

First there was Brendan Pang, the popular Masterchef competitor. Next was Brendan Pang, the owner of a dumpling kitchen in an Airstream. Now, the former social worker turned food personality has added a new entry to her resume: pop-up cooking school instructor.

Beginning in October, Pang will operate a part-time cooking school and event space at the former Roti Korner site of Hawaiian’s Mezz Mall in Mount Hawthorn. Composed of an open kitchen and a dining area, the space lends itself to both cooking classes and one-off events.

Initially, Pang will hold three hands-on classes each week, covering one of four topics: an introduction to dumplings, dumplings at home, hand-pulled noodles, and advanced dumplings.

“I really want to break the perceptions that dumplings and hand-pulled noodles are hard to make,” Pang says, “I know a lot of people think cooking is a bit of a chore, but I want to show them things with big and bold flavors they can make at home using affordable and accessible ingredients. Many classes start with just dough, i.e. flour, water and a pinch salt.

Class numbers are capped at 24 and last three hours, with the last half hour reserved for guests to eat their food and socialize. (Cooking classes are also BYO.)

Pang is also working on a program of dinners and events to test new dishes and ideas.

Bumplings Cooking School is at Shop 24, 148 Scarborough Beach Road, Mount Hawthorn and classes start in October. Classes are $130 and can be booked online.
