PM slammed for comparing Ukraine struggle to Brexit vote

Boris Johnson has been criticized for comparing Ukraine’s fight against the Russian invasion to Britons voting for Brexit.

In his speech to the Conservative Spring Conference in Blackpool today, Boris Johnson said: ‘I know it is the instinct of the people of this country, like the people of Ukraine, to choose freedom, every time .

“I can give you some famous recent examples.

“When Britons voted in such large numbers for Brexit I don’t think it was because they were unfriendly to foreigners. It was because they wanted to be free to do things differently and for this country to be able to function. itself.”

However, his Conservative counterpart, Lord Barwell, stressed that Ukraine was seeking to join the European Union.

Writing on Twitter, Barwell said: “Apart from the fact that voting in a free and fair referendum is in no way comparable to risking your life to defend your country from invasion and the inconvenience of Ukrainians fight for the freedom to join the EU, this comparison is fair.”

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey said the Prime Minister “is a national embarrassment”, adding: “To compare a referendum to women and children fleeing the bombs of (Vladimir) Putin is an insult to all Ukrainians.

“It’s not Churchill: it’s Basil Fawlty.”
